Do settlements have to be two roads apart?

Settlements all need a distance of one junction (the point where three tiles meet) between them. That is the length of two roads. This applies to all settlements so you can’t build closer to opponents or your own stuff.

Do you start with one or two settlements in Catan?

The first is from building settlements and cities. Each settlement is worth one victory point while each city is worth two victory points. The second is from having the longest road or largest army out of all the players.

How many roads must be between settlements?

Keep Development Cards hidden in your hand. You cannot build more pieces than what is available in your pool—a maximum of 5 settlements, 4 cities, and 15 roads. A new road must always connect to 1 of your existing roads, settlements, or cities. Only 1 road can be built on any given path4.

These are important because you can build roads, settlements, and cities connected to your initial building networks. That rule states that settlements must be at least two intersections away from any other settlement or city. In other words, settlements cannot be built one space away from another settlement or city.

Can you build a settlement on someone elses road in Catan?

Yes. You can build the settlement in the middle of an opponent’s road (as long as your own road connects to it and there is at least one gap before any other existing settlements). Yes.

But yeah, this is allowed, as long as the settlement you build isn’t immediately next to another settlement, and it is directly connected to a road of yours. Such a settlement splits the road it is built on, so this is a strategic move.

Can a road be placed next to a settlement?

Specifically, a road may only be placed next to an existing road if the intersection in between is either unoccupied, or occupied by a piece that is not able to block expansion. Friendly settlements and cities never block expansion, while opposing settlements and cities do.

What happens if you place your settlement on two 4s?

If you place your initial settlements on two 4s, two 6s, and two 9s, then unless someone rolls a 9, 6, or 4, you aren’t going to get any resources — and you should prepare for a long, boring defeat. Diversifying your initial settlement numbers increases the chance that you will get at least something from every roll.
