Do I have to buy all WoW expansions?
No, you only need to buy the current expansion. Once shadowlands launches it becomes the current expansion, meaning all those before it are included in the base sub. Currently as shadowlands is not out, Legion is the most recent expansion included in the base sub.
Can WoW play old expansions?
Old expansions are still there and playable. Meaning you get to choose an expansion to level 10-50 in. You can then level to 50 in only burning crusade expansion and queue for BC dungeons etc.

Do I need all WoW expansions to play Shadowlands?
World of Warcraft is not sold separately, only the latest expansion (currently Shadowlands) is sold separately. If you start a subscription or you buy game time, you immediately have access to all previous World of Warcraft expansions, and you can play all the content and all the maps up to level 50.
What happens if I don’t buy Shadowlands?
If you don’t purchase Shadowlands, but you keep your subscription active, you will be able to play everything that is currently in the game. Few years ago they made it so your sub includes all old content (currently, that is Vanilla to Legion. BfA will be included when Shadowlands goes live).
