It’s totally worth it, and it’s probably my favourite board game by far (either TI or Mage Knight: The Board Game). If you and your friends are the kinda people who, so far, have managed to adapt to other “advanced” board games, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Roughly 1.5 hours per player. It also depends on how experienced they are… New players need to look up rules and experienced players can take longer to do their move as they are thinking ahead further so it doesn’t go down a whole lot – unless your new players are looking up rules and thinking a long time!
Is Twilight Imperium difficult?
It is not the hardest game to learn, yes it’s deep but it’s a logical game to follow, and the rules are reasonably well written. My recommendation would be the same as one of the previous posters, play it solo so you’re comfortable with the rules and then get 3 friends around to play it.

Prerequisites are printed as a column on the lower-left side of each technology card and contain one or more symbols that correspond to the four technology types. Some technologies have no prerequisites and can be researched without owning any technology.

The Diplomacy card ability, Peace Accords , is great if there is room around you or if you have more than one front. If, however, you remain clustered in one area then it isn’t the most useful. If you are getting attacked then the odds are there isn’t room for you to start claiming territory.
