A triggered ability is an ability that automatically does something when a certain event occurs or a set of conditions is met (the latter is called a state-triggered ability).
Is discarding a card an activated ability?
Triggered abilities (“whenever you discard, effect”) all trigger when you discard a card. An activated ability (“discard a card: effect”) needs you to be discarding the card specifically to pay that cost. You can’t discard the same one card to pay for the cost of more than one activated ability.
Are tap abilities affected by summoning sickness?
