It can carry maximum of two units.
Can transports defend in Axis and Allies?
Vessels that carry land units to combat. A large group of transports could even defend itself. Starting with AA50 the combat capability of transports is entirely removed (with destroyers providing the extra defense).
How does combat work in Axis and Allies?
Combat Moves. Move as many of your units into hostile territories or hostile sea zones. Movement into hostile territories counts as combat movement, even if this territory is not occupied. You may move units through friendly spaces en route to hostile spaces.

Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition is the best in my humble opinion. Top notch components, most balanced of the latest versions of A&A and the mapboards fit on a normal sized dinnertable. Unfortunately it is long OOP, not to be re-released and therefore very expensive on the second hand market. 100% agree.

They can pass between sea zones connected by the canal or strait regardless of which side controls it. The Axis wins the game by controlling either any 8 victory cities on the Europe map or any 6 victory cities on the Pacific map for a complete round of play, as long as they control an Axis capital (Berlin, Rome, or Tokyo) at the end of that round.
