Can color mana pay colorless mana?

The (8) here is the familiar generic mana cost; you can pay for it with mana of any color, including colorless mana. The two (C) symbols — represented by diamonds — next to it are colorless mana costs.

Can generic mana be used as colorless?

Though one can use colorless mana to pay for generic mana costs, they are not the same thing. Generic is a type of cost, whereas colorless is a type of mana; a player cannot produce generic mana and, originally, there were no colorless costs. The latter changed with Oath of the Gatewatch.

Does Sol Ring tap for colorless mana?

Sol Ring produces two “colorless” mana. That is, it produces two mana that have no color. As I explained above, colorless mana can only be used to pay for costs that are not colored. Now, you can use colorless mana to pay for generic mana costs, but they’re not the same thing.

Does phyrexian Mana count colorless?

Since the rules don’t support phyrexian mana yet, the answer is the card is uncastable and colourless until they do.

It’s also Basic, so you can have more than 4 in a deck. It has no subtypes, so you can’t pick “Wastes” if asked to choose a basic land type.
