Set To play a Monster Card from your hand in face-down Defense Position is called a Set. In order to Set Monsters that are Level 5 or higher, you still need to Tribute. It has been Set and can be Summoned with a Flip Summon or flipped face-up by an attack or card effect.

No, you can’t tribute summon a monster on your first turn, barring special circumstances.
Can you summon a monster in face up defense mode?

Can you tribute summon a monster face down?
Yes, it’s called Tribute Set. Your opponent can confirm the identity as soon it’s flipped up or leaves the field. You can Tribute Summon a monster face-down. You do not need to show the monster to your opponent when you do so.
Can you Special Summon in face down defense?
Unless the effect specifically says that you can special summon face down, you can only special summon face up (but you can special summon in defense position if you want).

Yes. You can have a monster attack during the Battle Phase, then during Main Phase 2, Tribute it for a Tribute Summon, use it as Fusion/Synchro/Xyz/Link Materials, or use it for a Ritual Summon. You just cannot manually change it from Attack to Defense position.
Can you Tribute a monster you just summoned?
If you special summon another monster and haven’t yet normal summoned, then, yes, you can tribute that monster for a tribute summon.
Does a flip summon count as a normal summon?
Flip Summon is simultaneously regarded as both a Summon and Battle position change. A face-down monster flipped into face-up Attack Position by a card effect such as “Book of Taiyou” or “Ancient Forest” is not considered a Flip Summon. Flip Summon does not take up your Normal Summon/Set for the turn.
Can you tribute for a Level 4 monster?
Only monsters that are Level 4 or lower can be Normal Summoned without Tribute (Tribute Summoning is still considered Normal Summoning, however) unless specifically designated on the card text (Example: “Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight”).
