How do ports work in Catan?

A harbor is a coastal location that when a settlement or city is built upon, grants the settlement’s owner a trade ratio bonus. When built upon a 3:1 harbor, you can trade 3 of the same resource card for 1 card of your choice from the bank. There are also one 2:1 harbor for each of the different resources.

Can you double trade in Catan?

No. This is only possible during the set-up phase. Afterwards, each settlement must connect to at least one of your own roads, and each road must connect to one of your own settlements/cities or roads.

Can you start on port Catan?

You can place your starting settlements pretty much anywhere you want. You just have to obey the distance rule and ensure you place your settlement at a hex intersection.

Can you gift cards in Catan?

You and the other players negotiate the terms of your trades—such as which cards will be exchanged. You may trade as many times as you can, using single or multiple cards. However, you cannot give away cards, or trade matching resources (“trade” 3 ore for 1 ore, for example). You can’t trade during building phase.

Do robbers block ports Catan?

Like if the robber is on a hex with a port, that port also gets blocked. So any player with a settlement on that port will temporarily not get the bonuses from that port. What we did, was we used the pirate as a secondary option.

Does the pirate block ports Catan?

The Road Building card allows a player to build 2 roads, 2 ships, or one of each when used. The pirate can also prevent ships from being built or moved nearby, but it does not interfere with harbors.

How many times can you trade in Catan?

You may trade as many times as you can, using single or multiple cards, but you may not give away cards (i.e., “trade” 0 cards for 1 or more cards).

Can you trade for nothing in Catan?

On Catan, a trade always involves a give and take of resources. Consequently, Catan’s trade law does not contain a “trade” of something for nothing or for immaterial goods such as services.

Can you build a city without a settlement in Catan?

In order to build a city you must have a settlement to upgrade, and enough resource for the upgrade.

Can you build a settlement next to your own settlement?

That rule states that settlements must be at least two intersections away from any other settlement or city. In other words, settlements cannot be built one space away from another settlement or city.

Can you trade and build in Catan?

In a game with strict separation between trade phase and build phase: no. In a game without separation between trade phase and build phase: yes.

Can you trade future cards in Catan?

Future trades are not against the rules, however there is nothing which makes these trades binding. The official rule is that something must be exchanged during a trade and trades must be conducted only with the player whose turn it is.
