How do you bid a 5-card major?
To play five-card majors
- at least 13 points and interest in winning the contract,
- no five-card major (else opener would have bid it, unless also holding a six-card or longer minor),
- no four-card diamond suit (else opener would have bid 1♦).
Can you open 1NT with a five-card major?
If you open 1NT with a five-card major, you may miss a 5-3 trump fit. You may be able to back into it on an auction like 1NT – 2NT – 3 – 4 if partner recognizes that 3 offers him a choice of 4 or 3NT.
